Shivam Dube played a key role as India successfully defended their men's cricket title at the 2026 Asian Games in Nisshin, Japan, defeating arch-rivals Pakistan by 19 runs in a high-octane gold medal clash on Saturday (October 3).

The all-rounder contributed a quickfire cameo of 15-ball 27 with two fours and as many sixes to propel India to a formidable 211/6 after Abhishek Sharma (61 off 28) and Tilak Varma (51 off 22) destroyed the Pakistan bowling attack with dazzling half-centuries.

Alongside his batting, Dube picked up 2 wickets for 33 runs, defending the final over to secure the Asian Games gold medal for India.

During a conversation in a Cricinfo video, former cricketer-turned-commentator Aakash Chopra highlighted that Shivam Dube is heavily under-rated and does not receive enough credit for his crucial performances in high-pressure matches for the Indian T20I team.

According to Chopra, Dube possesses an exceptional ability to hit sixes and dismantle spinners with ease and his all-round capability allows the team management to balance the playing XI and plan batting resources effectively.

"Oh, yes, of course. I think he doesn't get enough credit. He's got exceptional skill and quality to hit sixes. He takes down spinners for fun. He also allows the team to plan accordingly as far as their batting resources are concerned, something that India did throughout the 2026 World Cup-winning campaign, where it was, if it was against England, they just threw him in before Surya (Suryakumar Yadav) could walk out," Chopra said in the video.

"The same thing was done earlier, and now you just have him there. Knowing well if there is a period where spinners are likely to dominate, you throw him in, and he'll take them apart. And to do that in big games, finals, like World Cup finals, it takes some doing it is exceptional. He should be accredited and applauded a little more, is what I feel," he added.

Shivam Dube will return to action in the upcoming five-match T20I series against the West Indies, starting October 6 in Lucknow.
