Former England all-rounder Moeen Ali provided a sneak peek into the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) team culture under MS Dhoni.
Speaking on the Super Over YouTube channel, Ali revisited his time with the franchise and detailed how Dhoni's unique leadership style helped reduce the mental fatigue often associated with formal, long-drawn team strategy sessions.
Rather than pulling players into a conference room where attention inevitably drifts, Dhoni insisted that batters actively talk, troubleshoot, and strategize with one another while they were at the practice nets.
This setup allowed players to pass down practical knowledge and tactical changes directly in a live environment, making the information far more memorable and actionable.
"CSK had a great blend of more experienced players and less youngsters. There weren't so many meetings. MS Dhoni used to say batting meetings should be done in practice. He used to say that when the whole team was practicing in the nets, that's when the batters should be talking to each other. That made sense because when you get the batters back in the room, no one is listening or focused," Ali said.
Moeen Ali also spilled beans on the invaluable captaincy lessons he learned from the legendary Indian captain, which helped him lead the Antigua & Barbuda Falcons to the Caribbean Premier League (CPL) 2026 title.
He emphasized Dhoni's philosophy that getting a smaller group of less-established players aligned on the same page is far more impactful than relying solely on individual superstars.
"I learnt a lot from MS about the importance of having lesser good players but getting everyone on the same page. The other thing I learnt from him is you have six bowlers generally in T20s, and it's not about whom to bowl; it's about who not to bowl. That changed my whole mindset on captaincy," Ali stated.
"So it's about taking pressure off you as captain by identifying the bowlers who can't bowl in certain situations. That mindset takes away the pressure of you making a mistake. You simplify things that way by identifying situations for different bowlers and then go with your gut feel, which MS was amazing at," he remarked.
