Ajit Agarkar's tenure as BCCI chief selector ends in October this year.
However, there were several reports that the BCCI might not give an extension to Agarkar, whose contract ends in October this year. During his tenure as chief selector, the Indian team won two T20 World Cups in 2024 and 2026 and one Champions Trophy in 2025.
As per a report published in The Hindu on Friday evening, Agarkar has officially notified the BCCI of his choice to step down as a selector once his present term concludes on October 4.
“Agarkar has formally informed the BCCI just before the Annual General Meeting (AGM) that he doesn’t wish to continue as a selector after his term ends on October 4," a BCCI office-bearer told the publication.
It has been reported by Hindustan Times that the Indian cricket board is now looking for a new chief selector after receiving communication from Agarkar.
“In his communication, Agarkar has cited his previous discussions with the board in February, when he had first alerted top decision-makers to look for alternatives at the end of his current term," a BCCI official told Hindustan Times.
This news of Agarkar’s communication to BCCI officials came hours after vice-president Rajiv Shukla confirmed that BCCI office-bearers have been authorized in the AGM on September 18, 2026, to take a call on whether to give chairman of selectors Agarkar an extension or find his replacement.
“The General Body has authorized the BCCI office-bearers to take a call on the chief selector,” vice-president Rajiv Shukla said after the BCCI AGM.
A latest report from the Times of India had stated that former India cricketers Parthiv Patel and Pragyan Ojha were front-runners to take up the role of BCCI chief selector.
