Pakistan’s recent loss to England in the second Test of the three-match series has led to a deepening of the crisis in the team. Reports have stated that after going 0-2 down in the three-Test series, the Men in Green are likely to undergo a major coaching shake-up before the third and final Test at Edgbaston.
Pakistan had lost the first Test in Leeds by an innings and 103 runs, and much was expected at Lord’s, a venue where they had success in the previous few encounters in Tests. However, Pakistani batting failed in both innings, and they lost the game by 194 runs.
And now, as per Geo News, white-ball head coach Mike Hesson has reportedly been told by the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) to look after the red-ball team as well. It is expected that Hesson will be part of the Pakistan dressing room for the third Test at Edgbaston, which begins on September 9.
At first, Hesson had gone to London with Aqib Javed, Pakistan's Director of High Performance. His position has apparently been expanded to include the Test squad, though, after the team's most recent failure.
The development has also sparked new concerns about the future of Sarfaraz Ahmed, the current head coach of Test cricket and a former captain of Pakistan. After the England tour, Sarfaraz might lose his job, according to Geo News, and Hesson might take over as Test coach.
"It is highly likely that after the ODI and T20 series, Mike Hesson will also take over the coaching responsibilities of the Test team, and Sarfaraz Ahmed will be removed from coaching the Test team after the England tour," the Geo News report stated.
PCB is yet to officially confirm Hesson as Pakistan Test head coach or indicate whether he will take over the role permanently. The report also stated that it remains unclear whether Edgbaston is a one-off arrangement or a new step in restructuring Pakistan’s coaching set-up.
The reported coaching changes come amid further alterations to Pakistan's Test squad.
The report added that Imam-ul-Haq and Mohammad Rizwan have been sent home following the Lord's defeat, while Saim Ayub and Arafat Minhas have been called up for the final Test.
In addition to giving England their first Test series victory since December 2024, the Lord's Test triumph prolonged Pakistan's batting difficulties.
