VVS Laxman was approached for chief selector role, but he reportedly turned down the offer.
A report has stated that the BCCI is thinking of not extending chief selector Ajit Agarkar’s contract once it expires. This comes after several media reports stated that VVS Laxman is in line to become director of cricket of the Indian team, and BCCI officials are set to meet Agarkar to discuss his future after Sri Lanka Tests.
The Telegraph report stated that BCCI wanted VVS Laxman to replace Ajit Agarkar as next chief selector, but the ex-India batter isn’t interested in the role, as he didn’t want to travel too much.
And now the report has stated that ex-India fast bowler Zaheer Khan has emerged as the new contender for the chief of the BCCI selection panel role.
"Another name that has cropped up as Agarkar's replacement is Zaheer Khan. The former pacer is being discussed if Agarkar fails to keep his job and Laxman is made director of cricket," the report said.
Meanwhile, Indian Express reported that the BCCI officials are set to meet Ajit Agarkar to discuss his future after the Sri Lanka Test series. Agarkar will complete three years as chairman in September and is eligible for a one-year extension.
According to the report, the meeting would occur in the midst of disagreements about Rohit Sharma's future between the BCCI and the selectors.
Devajit Saikia, the secretary of the BCCI, stated that Sharma will "continue to represent the country as long as he is in the scheme of things" despite the selectors allegedly telling him that they were looking to replace him in the squad following the England series in July.
According to the report, in the run-up to the 2027 ODI World Cup, the BCCI wants the selectors to evaluate Sharma's future series by series. However, it is said that the selectors were not pleased with Saikia's remarks.
