Chopra emphasized that managing a generational fast bowler is a simple and necessary choice.
Former cricketer-turned-commentator Aakash Chopra strongly defended Jasprit Bumrah's workload management, stating that protecting a rare talent and securing his long-term fitness must take priority over playing every single match across formats.
Speaking on The Great Indian Cricket Show on Doordarshan, Chopra emphasized that managing a generational fast bowler is a simple and necessary choice rather than an option to ignore.
Notably, Bumrah suffered an impact injury and subsequent reactive swelling in his left knee during the England ODI series last month.
Despite receiving an injection and undergoing rehabilitation at the BCCI's Centre of Excellence (CoE) in Bengaluru, the Indian pace spearhead continued to experience discomfort, prompting medical staff to advise against rushing his return. Jammu & Kashmir seamer Auqib Nabi eventually replaced him in the Test squad for the ongoing Sri Lanka tour.
"If you have a genius like Jasprit Bumrah, and if his body needs some rest, if his workload needs to be managed, why would you not do it? Bumrah is a genius. Many people believe that if you are fit, then you should play. If you are not, then don't play," Chopra said.
While acknowledging that the Indian team can cope and life goes on in anyone's absence, Chopra argued that a player of Bumrah's stature should still be preserved.
"India will still manage. It will manage. Life goes on, whether there is someone or not. But if you have a genius like Bumrah, if his body needs some rest, if his workload needs to be managed, why would you not do it? It's a very simple thing," he added.
Recently, it was reported that Team India might have to prepare for a future where Jasprit Bumrah is limited to playing only T20Is after the 2027 ODI World Cup.
“The CoE was working on increasing Bumrah’s workload before the Test series in Sri Lanka. It was felt that he would not be ready in time. It has been a long time since he has bowled in longer formats for a while," TOI quoted a source as saying.
“The CoE is very careful about him. They haven’t given any timeline on him. Anyway, Indian cricket may have to now start getting ready for life without Bumrah, especially in the longer formats after next year," the source added.
India, led by Shubman Gill, kicked off the two-Test series against Sri Lanka on Saturday (August 15) at the Galle International Stadium.
