Bengal cricketer Abishek Porel, who also plays for Delhi Capitals (DC) in the Indian Premier League (IPL), has been arrested by the police from Emami City under the Dum Dum police station, according to Hooghly Rural police SP Kunwar Bhushan Singh.

Porel was arrested over in connection with a criminal case registered on the complaint of a medical student alleging rape, criminal intimidation, and other serious offences.

The woman filed a police complaint earlier in June, claiming that he had a sexual relationship with her under pretenses of marriage and had assaulted and intimidated her.

In relation to the case, the Calcutta High Court subsequently ordered the police to detain the cricket player. Porel, who has previously visited the UK and Australia with the India A team, has refuted all previous accusations.

The woman said in the lawsuit that she and Porel had been dating for the previous three years, but that once disagreements arose last year, the cricket player allegedly began "distancing" himself from her. She further said that although Porel had vowed to marry her, he is no longer willing to do so.

The woman accused Porel of assault and criminal intimidation in her complaint, alleging that he had sex with her while promising to marry her.

"We have received a complaint and started an investigation," a police official told PTI.

Porel had made his Bengal FC debut in 2022 and has made 1408 runs in 32 matches with one century and 12 fifties. He has also made 833 runs in 23 List-A games and made 1590 runs in 61 T20 games.

He has been with the Delhi Capitals since IPL 2023, scoring 769 runs in 35 games with four fifties and a best score of 65.
