Former India captain and BCCI chief Sourav Ganguly, his wife Dona Ganguly, and family have received death threats in the form of several threatening letters over the past few months. Ganguly complained about the same to police after one threat claimed that he and his wife Dona would be killed.
Police have launched an inquiry to identify who delivered the messages, according to a report by the news agency PTI.
After receiving the most recent letter at his office on Monday, Ganguly, the current president of the Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB), filed a written complaint at the Thakurpukur Police Station in south Kolkata, according to the officer.
According to reports, the letters had been coming in under the former BCCI president's name for around six months, but at first, they were not taken seriously.
According to the police complaint filed by the former cricketer's management, his office got two letters on Monday that contained specific threats to kill Ganguly and his wife as well as to hurt those who are close to him.
According to the police officer, detectives were analyzing the letters' contents to determine the sender's identity and motivation.
"We are taking the complaint seriously and have begun an investigation. We are examining the letters, their source, and the courier trail to identify the person responsible," the officer said.
According to preliminary investigations, a person from Belgharia in the North 24 Parganas area may have sent the letters via a courier service, he said.
In order to obtain information on the shipments, the police have contacted the relevant courier service and started looking into the movement of the SIM card that was purportedly used by the sender.
"We have spoken to people from the courier service and tracked down one mobile number. We are trying to locate it," he said.
Kolkata Police are investigating whether all the letters were sent by one person and the reason behind the letters.
