Virat Kohli had played a brilliant knock of 235 runs during the 2016 Wankhede Test against England.
Legendary spinner Ravichandran Ashwin recalled a famous, high-tempered incident from the 2016 India-England Test series, involving James Anderson and Virat Kohli.
The fourth match of the five-Test series was played at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. England scored 400 in their first innings and the hosts responded with a massive 631, powered by Virat Kohli’s brilliant 235 runs.
During the match, however, Anderson commented in a press conference that Kohli's technical flaws were just hidden by the flat pitch conditions in India, suggesting the then Indian captain would struggle again in England.
"I'm not sure he's changed. I just think any technical deficiencies he's got aren't in play out here. The wickets just take that out of the equation. There's not that pace in the wicket to get the nicks, like we did against him in England with a bit more movement. When that's not there, he's very much suited to playing in these conditions," Anderson had stated.
Ashwin and a few of his Indian teammates found the comment disrespectful and confronted the England pacer the moment he walked out to bat in England’s second innings.
"If something comes at us, we will double it and give it back. We pulled Anderson out once and got him to bat from the boundary rope. We were playing in Mumbai. They batted first and scored 450-something. We were 330/6, and Virat scored a double hundred from there and took it to 600. He went in the press conference and said this is India, let him come to England. How much does it take to credit someone? I felt it was below the line. The next day, when they were coming to bat, a few of us went and escorted him from the boundary line. He should not have spoken like that," Ashwin said in a recent episode of Star Sports' show 'Cheeky Singles'.
India went on to win the Mumbai Test by an innings and 36 runs. Ashwin starred with the ball, claiming 12 wickets across the two English innings.
