Chakaravarthy's T20I career is unlikely to go beyond the 2026 Asian Games.
Varun Chakaravarthy's recurring injuries and diminishing mystery have put his international longevity under intense scrutiny, with the BCCI selectors reportedly considering moving on from the veteran spinner.
Earlier this year, Chakaravarthy entered the T20 World Cup as the world's No. 1 ranked T20I bowler. However, his effectiveness dropped considerably in the marquee event as batters from all major teams countered him comfortably.
What didn’t help Chakaravarthy’s cause was playing some of the IPL 2026 games for Kolkata Knight Riders despite a fractured toe. He was forced to miss the Ireland T20I tour since his rehabilitation wasn't complete.
Chakaravarthy’s struggles with form have now been compounded by a Grade 2 hamstring injury, which ruled him out of the last two T20Is against England last week and the upcoming tour of Zimbabwe.
"An MRI scan subsequently revealed a Grade 2 hamstring injury. Based on specialist medical advice, he has been ruled out of the upcoming T20I series against Zimbabwe," the BCCI release had stated regarding Chakaravarthy’s injury.
This led to concerns that Chakravarthy, who would turn 35 next month, returned to competitive action without completing the fitness protocol.
According to a PTI report, Varun Chakaravarthy was lucky to find a place in India’s 2026 Asian Games lineup since the selectors had to announce the squad within a stipulated time frame.
“However, beyond that when preparations for the 2028 Olympics and the T20 World Cup in Australia start, Chakravarthy will already be 37 and there is high possibility that he won't be looked beyond this year's Asian Games,” the report further stated.
Varun Chakaravarthy has represented India in 48 T20Is so far, claiming 74 wickets at an economy rate of 7.67. He has also featured in 4 ODIs, and was part of the Champions Trophy winning squad last year.
