The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has been asked to decide the fate as harsh punishments have reportedly been recommended against Vaibhav Sooryavanshi and Tilak Varma, who were at the centre of chaos during India A’s match against Sri Lanka A in Dambulla on Monday (June 15).

According to a report published in Sportstar, match referee Pradeep Jeyapragash has proposed a 50% match fee fine for Sooryavanshi and a 30% match fee fine for captain Tilak.

The tension boiled over after India A failed to score 17 runs in the Super Over. As Sooryavanshi was walking back to the pavilion, Sri Lanka A player Vishen Halambage reportedly provoked the 15-year-old by saying, "Go home, this is not the IPL".

This prompted the teenager to charge back, leading to a shoving match that required intervention from senior players like Niroshan Dickwella to defuse the situation.

On the other hand, Tilak faces a proposed 30% match fee deduction for his lengthy, highly animated arguments with the on-field umpires regarding bad light and a controversial Super Over no-ball decision.

Since the International Cricket Council (ICC) does not oversee disciplinary issues for A-team tours, the decision to punish players fall under the jurisdiction of respective cricket boards. The match referee can only recommend sanctions, which the boards may choose to enforce.

Earlier, Cricbuzz reported that Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) has penalized the players involved in the disciplinary breaches during the Sri Lanka A versus India A fixture.

As per the report, Halambage was the primary recipient of the punishment as he had been targeting Sooryavanshi since the first game of the tournament and also sledged him during Monday’s clash when India A batted.

Interestingly, Dickwella has been also fined despite acting as the peacemaker in this episode. However, his fine was for an entirely unrelated on-field incident during the game, heavily suspected to be excessive appealing.
