Sooryavanshi angrily pushed one Sri Lanka A player after being provoked.
Ugly scenes erupted during the Tri-Nation A series match between India A and Sri Lanka A at the Rangiri Dambulla International Stadium on Monday (June 15).
Teenage batting sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi found himself at the centre of chaos, where he lost his cool after being provoked by one Sri Lanka A player.
The tension boiled over after India A failed to chase 17 runs in the Super Over. As Sooryavanshi was walking back to the pavilion, Sri Lanka A player Vishen Halambage reportedly sledged the 15-year-old by saying, "Match over…now you go home".
This prompted Sooryavanshi to charge back, leading to a shoving match that required intervention from senior players like Niroshan Dickwella to defuse the situation.
A day later, India’s spin bowling coach Sairaj Bahutule addressed the heated altercation during a press conference, calling the incident unfortunate but urged caution before jumping to conclusions.
"It was an unfortunate incident, but we don't know how it was provoked. The way I know Vaibhav, he is a very composed boy," Bahutule told reporters on the eve of the second India versus Afghanistan ODI in Lucknow.
The former India spinner called for the young cricketers to be ‘educated in terms of how we need to behave’.
"It was unfortunate, but I'm sure there are experienced coaches there who will explain things to him. I think the Sri Lankan players should also be educated in terms of how we need to behave, and the same goes for us," he added.
Bahutule stressed that Sooryavanshi carries significant responsibility as a young international representative and expressed confidence the incident would not be repeated.
"We will make sure that information is given to him as to why that happened. He is a young kid with a lot of responsibilities and is representing India. I think there will be some understanding, and I'm sure he won't repeat it," he remarked.
Sooryavanshi is set to link up with the senior India squad for the upcoming T20I tours of Ireland and England in a few days. Before joining the senior side, he will play a high-stake, must-win match for India A against Afghanistan A in Dambulla on Wednesday (June 17).
