Tamim Iqbal will lead an interim committee until new elections for BCB are held.
The National Sports Council of Bangladesh dismissed the board on Tuesday, claiming 'large-scale violations' in the previous board election. A new 11-member ad hoc committee, led by Iqbal, has been formed to oversee the board until new elections are held. The interim body has been directed to organize elections in 90 days.
Iqbal, one of Bangladesh's finest batters, targeted the outgoing BCB president, Islam, claiming that cricket in the country had suffered during his time.
“I am sure you all understand that the damage to cricket’s reputation over the last one and a half years must be corrected collectively. There will be criticism regarding whether we perform well or not, but no one here wants cricket to remain at its current low point.
We always want cricket to be a source of pride. Those who work or have worked at the BCB should proudly say they work here. I am not sure if that pride can currently be expressed given the activities of the past one and a half years. We must restore that pride,” Iqbal told reporters on Tuesday.
He further stated that every player and stakeholder will be respected and that the board will change for the best.
“Players must be respected, and every stakeholder must be respected. That will be our primary task. We will change for the better, not just in words. We will make mistakes, and our team may make mistakes too, but we will learn from them and continue to try. This is our main goal,” he said.
Iqbal did not disclose whether he planned to participate in the board elections.
“You would have to ask me personally (whether I will take part in the next election). I may choose to participate, or someone else may, or they may not. When a free and fair election is held, I will request everyone interested to participate,” said Tamim.
Furthermore, Tamim added that the interim committee wants to create an environment where everyone can participate in the elections. He also mentioned that the T20 World Cup 2026, where Bangladesh was booted out after the government refused to send the team to India due to security concerns.
“Alongside this, we will obviously look into day-to-day activities; there are World Cup issues, as you know. We will do whatever is necessary regarding everything,” he said.
Tamim Iqbal remains the only Bangladesh batter with centuries in all three international formats.
