While Team India has done well in white-ball cricket under Gambhir, it has regressed in Test cricket.
Reports have stated that India's head coach Gautam Gambhir, whose contract with the BCCI runs till the 2027 ICC World Cup that will be played in South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Namibia, might get his tenure extended till the 2028 LA Olympics if the Indian board offers an extension.
Gambhir currently has two priorities: winning the 2017 T20 World Cup and the much-anticipated ODI World Cup next year, both of which might have a significant impact on his future.
According to a report by Dainik Jagran, Gambhir's influence may extend beyond South Africa. If the BCCI continues to have faith in him, Gambhir will have to make the final decision. According to reports, Gambhir's participation in the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics is possible.
Cricket will return to the Olympic Games after a 128-year absence, and with the Indian contingent running low on medals, a gold medal, which is entirely possible, would bring India great pride.
Cricket’s return to the Olympics could pave the way for another gold medal for India, as its T20I team is arguably the best in the world. And given its bench strength, it could only get stronger by the time the 2028 Games come along.
Reports further added that everything depends on the BCCI. Despite Gambhir's achievements for India, including winning the Champions Trophy and the Asia Cup, the team's catastrophic decline in Test cricket cannot be overlooked.
Under Gambhir, India has become a ghost of the force they once were in the red-ball format, suffering two home whitewashes and falling behind in the World Test Championship cycle.
For Indian cricket, 2026 is a year when Test cricket takes a backseat, with only five matches scheduled: one against Afghanistan, two in Sri Lanka, and two in New Zealand. However, the grind will resume in 2027 with the Border-Gavaskar Trophy at home in January.
