Holder believes sport can play a role in easing political tensions.
West Indies all-rounder Jason Holder has expressed his sadness over the ongoing India-Pakistan divide, saying that it should not be allowed to overshadow the game.
During the Asia Cup 2025 in the UAE, the Suryakumar Yadav-led Indian side refrained from shaking hands with their Pakistani counterparts as the games were played amidst heightened tensions between two nations following the Pahalgam terror attack and retaliatory Operation Sindoor.
The arch-rivals faced each other thrice in the continental event and India emerged victorious on all occasions, including the title clash. In all three meetings, the Men in Blue refused to shake hands and exchange post-match pleasantries with the Pakistan players, who also engaged in provocative gestures.
After winning the final, the Indian team refused to collect the trophy and medal from the ACC and PCB chief Mohsin Naqvi, who posted anti-India sentiments on social media throughout the tournament.
Holder pointed to ugly incidents from the Asia Cup and said the rivalry has increasingly spilled beyond the boundary ropes, hurting the spirit of cricket.
“Honestly, I don’t like this whole India-Pakistan beef. Seeing how it goes far beyond the cricket field is just sad, because these are two powerhouses of world cricket,” Holder said while speaking on the Willow by Cricbuzz podcast.
“Moments like that feel unnecessary. These things shouldn’t be in our game, especially when we talk about being ambassadors to the world,” he added.
According to the former West Indies captain, sport can play a role in easing political tensions as top cricketers carry influence that goes far beyond results.
“If you’re inspiring a generation and inspiring the world, then we have to find a way to come together,” Holder stated.
“I understand how big this rivalry is off the field. But if change is going to happen, it can start on the cricket field. A way to soften things is by India and Pakistan coming together through sport.”
Holder reckons such cooperation could have a wider impact. “If it’s possible at a sporting level, maybe it becomes possible in everyday life too,” he said. “Stopping the fighting and tension would be huge.”
He also commented on the cultural impact of what fans see from their role models. “There’s always a trickle-down effect,” Holder said. “When people see their heroes behaving a certain way, it influences them. That’s why it’s sad to see this play out.”
Despite recent diplomatic hostilities, Holder emphasized his respect for both nations. “They’re beautiful countries with incredible people and cultures. That’s why moments like this hurt everyone who loves cricket.”
Holder ended by calling on the sport to live up to its values. “We talk about unity and growing the game. So let’s practise what we preach — bring cricket together and build healthier relationships,” he concluded.
