Nathan Lyon suffered a torn hamstring in Adelaide Test.
According to Australia's head coach, Andrew McDonald, veteran off-spinner Nathan Lyon is determined to reintegrate into the Australian team after undergoing surgery for a torn hamstring.
After hurting his right hamstring while trying to stop a boundary on the last day of the third Ashes 2025-26 Test in Adelaide, the 38-year-old will be sidelined for a long time.
McDonald emphasized that Lyon is still essential to Australia's plans, despite rumors that his 141-Test career may be over.
This most recent setback represents Lyon's second serious injury in as many years. He earlier sustained a calf injury at Lord's, which prevented him from participating in the 2023 Ashes series in England.
Lyon had surgery on Tuesday, but he is still anticipated to be part of the team for Friday's fourth Ashes Test in Melbourne.
"He's pretty shattered. He's a huge part of what we do. He's facing a long recovery timeframe. That type of injury—it's going to be a hard period for him to get back to where he was. "But he still wants to do it, and that's the main thing," McDonald told cricket.com.au.
Post the Ashes series, Australia will not play another Test series until they tour Bangladesh in mid-2026. After that, a busy schedule awaits Australia, including a five-Test series in India and the 150th anniversary Test against England in March.
"India's on the horizon; he'll be a key part of that. We've got New Zealand and South Africa before that. So, get through this rehab, and then we'll look forward,” McDonald said of Lyon.
