M Vijay played majority of his India and IPL career under MS Dhoni.
Dhoni, who has been retained by the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) for the IPL 2026 season, remains one of cricket's most successful leaders.
From the 2007 T20 World Cup and the 2011 ODI World Cup to the 2013 Champions Trophy, his accomplishments continue to stand out, and his leadership also propelled India to the top of the Test rankings for the first time in 2009.
Notably, M Vijay played the majority of his Indian Premier League (IPL) career under MS Dhoni for the Chennai Super Kings, and also his India career was played under Dhoni.
"Dhoni is natural and very unique. Those personalities you cannot replicate. Anybody can come and do what he is doing. The way he has dominated and taken the game, he is a very strong person. The way he launched those sixes, I don't think anyone else got that range as a right-hander,” Vijay said on Taruwar Kohli’s YouTube channel.
To prove his point, he highlighted MS Dhoni’s decision to hand the ball to Joginder Sharma for the last over of the final of the T20 World Cup 2007 against Pakistan, who needed 13 runs to win the trophy.
"He gave that last over to Joginder, and we won it. There may not have been logic, as Harbhajan had an over as a senior. But it won us the cup, as he did something out of the box. We all should be proud that he was born in our country," Vijay said.
MS Dhoni retired from all cricket in 2020, playing his last game for India in the 2019 World Cup. He has continued to ply his trade in the IPL for the CSK franchise, winning the title five times.
On the other hand, M Vijay enjoyed a successful career for India, scoring 4,490 runs across formats, playing 61 Tests, 17 ODIs, and 9 T20Is from 2008 to 2018. He was a core member of MS Dhoni’s CSK team in the early years of IPL and won the tournament in 2010, 2011, and 2018 with the franchise.
