Gill sustained the injury while batting in the first Test against South Africa at Eden Gardens.
India’s ODI and Test skipper Shubman Gill faces a lengthier spell on the sidelines after a neck injury ruled him out of action for the ongoing second Test against South Africa in Guwahati.
Gill sustained the injury while batting in the first Test at Eden Gardens. He batted just three balls in the first innings and did not walk out in India's second dig.
The 26-year-old was initially suspected to have picked up a mild sprain, but it turned out to be a bit more serious and required specialist intervention at a hospital in Kolkata.
Now, a report published in TOI claims that Gill's injury is more serious than it appears, and he will also miss both the ODI and T20I series against South Africa.
According to the report, Shubman Gill will remain out of action for the rest of the year as his issue is understood to be a nerve injury.
The report further stated that the player has been given an injection, and his rehabilitation process will only start after a few days.
While the team management wants Gill to be fit soon, the case is being treated with caution to ensure that he doesn’t aggravate his injury with the fast-approaching T20 World Cup 2026.
As per the report, Gill could return to action in the white-ball series against New Zealand at home, which will be India's first assignment of 2026. The Men in Blue will face the Kiwis in three ODIs and five T20Is from January 11 to January 31.
Apart from being the captain of the ODI and Test team, Shubman Gill is also the vice-captain of the Indian team in T20Is, where Suryakumar Yadav leads the side.
The BCCI selection committee, led by Ajit Agarkar, is expected to announce India’s ODI and T20I squads for the South Africa series later today (November 23).
