Gavaskar is ready to make Jemimah's fun World Cup promise come true.
As Team India clinched the ICC Women's ODI World Cup 2025 title, star batter Jemimah Rodrigues reminded the legendary Sunil Gavaskar of his promise to sing a duet with her.
Jemimah had an excellent World Cup, with the highlight being her 127* against Australia in the semi-final, where India pulled off the biggest chase in the history of women’s ODI cricket to knock out the seven-time Champions.
Before the World Cup final versus South Africa, Gavaskar told India Today that if India won, he would sing alongside Jemimah on guitar.
Following the monumental triumph, Jemimah took to Instagram and shared a video message for Gavaskar, saying she was "ready with the guitar" for a jamming session with the former India captain.
"Hi Sunil Gavaskar sir, I saw your message. You said that if India wins the World Cup, we both will sing a song together. So I am ready with the guitar and hope that you are ready with your mic. Lots of love," Jemimah said in her video.
On Wednesday (November 5), Gavaskar replied to Jemimah, firstly congratulating her and then sharing a plan for their session.
"Hi Jemimah. Firstly, many many congratulations to you and your team for having won the ICC Women's World Cup. That has been a tremendous moment. A moment to cherish, a moment to savour, a moment for the ages. And for all the happiness and joy that you've given the Indian cricketing community and the Indian cricket fans. We can't thank you enough," Gavaskar said in a video uploaded his on his Instagram account.
"Yes, I do remember saying that if we win the World Cup, and I was always confident that you were going to do that, that you will play the guitar and I will sing the song. The song of course is up to you which one. I had a song prepared in case I was able to get you to the change room but of course I didn't have the accreditation to be there. I was at the ground but I didn't have the accreditation to be there. But never mind. You tell me the date. This weekend maybe, Saturday or Sunday. Saturday the Indian team is playing in Australia so maybe you want to do it on Saturday evening or Sunday after the game. Entirely up to you. Do let me know. Looking forward to doing that," he added.
Coming to the final, India defeated South Africa by 52 runs to lift the coveted trophy. Asked to bat first, the Women in Blue posted 298/7 on the board, powered by Shafali Verma’s 87, Deepti Sharma’s 58, and vital contributions from Smriti Mandhana (45) and Richa Ghosh (34).
During the chase, South Africa fought hard on the back of skipper Laura Wolvaardt’s superb 101, but a sensational spell from Deepti (5/39) helped India bowl out the opposition for 246 in 45.3 overs.
