Sri Lanka’s opening batsman Sadeera Samarawickrama has not taken the field on the second day of the third and final Test match at Feroz Shah Kotla, Delhi after being hit on the head while fielding on Day 1.

Samarawickrama was hit off the last delivery of the 30th over bowled by Dilruwan Perera, when Murali Vijay tried to pull a short delivery. It hit him on the helmet grill and he was immediately taken off the field and sent to the hospital for precautionary scans.

Sri Lankan team manager Asanka Gurusinha has now revealed that the 22-year-old suffered mild concussion after taking the blow on his forehead.

Sadeera is not taking any part at all in today’s proceedings. He has got mild concussion. There’s a protocol in place when a player gets hit on the head and we are following that. We will take a call after taking him to the doctors at close of play,” Gurusinha was quoted by Cricbuzz as saying after the end of the first day's play.

"All the precautionary x-rays and scans have been done. It has been advised that he should be kept under medical observation for the next 24 hours. We will take a call on whether he will open or not depending on doctor's advice."

"Since it was an on field injury, he can open the innings if he is fit," he further added.

Samarawickrama was fielding at the crucial short leg position. The youngster was also hit during the second Test in Nagpur. However, he was cleared to continue since the scans hadn’t revealed any fracture in his ribs.
