KKR clinched their third IPL title under Iyer's leadership in 2024.
Under Shreyas Iyer’s captaincy, Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) clinched their third IPL title in the 2024 season. However, the middle-order batter was not retained by the franchise, much to the shock of the fans, experts and former cricketer alike.
After parting ways with KKR, Shreyas entered the mega auction with a base price of INR 2 crore. He was sold to the Punjab Kings (PBKS) for INR 26.75 crore, making him the second-most expensive player in IPL auction history.
Iyer repaid the faith of the PBKS management, guiding the team to the final of IPL 2025. He credited their support for his success as a leader and batter.
“I offer a lot as a captain and player. Punjab gave me all the support I needed from coaches, management, and players. I was able to contribute in meetings and make decisions on and off the field,” Iyer said while speaking to GQ India.
About his time at KKR, the 30-year-old stated, “I was part of the conversation, but I wasn’t fully in the mix. I’ve had to work my way up to get to this position.”
Shreyas Iyer ended up as the sixth-highest run-getter in the IPL 2025 season, amassing 604 runs in 17 matches and innings at a strike rate of 175.07 with six fifties. However, he wasn’t even considered in the reserves for the Asia Cup 2025.
Meanwhile, Shreyas on Saturday (August 6) was named India A captain for the upcoming two red-ball matches against Australia A in Lucknow.
“I can only control the controllable. I will keep working on my skills, and when the opportunity comes, I’ll take it,” he remarked.
