Shubman Gill has scored 649 runs in 14 games for GT in IPL 2025.
Ahead of Friday, May 30's Eliminator match against MI in Mullanpur, Sunil Gavaskar has discussed the changes in Shubman Gill's leadership for Gujarat Titans (GT) in the IPL 2025 compared to the 2024 season.
Last season, Gill was appointed captain of the GT team, although the former champions' performance wasn't good. Despite having only five victories, the Titans placed seventh in the standings.
But in IPL 2025, when Gill's leadership was outstanding for GT, everything changed, and the Titans earned a spot in the playoffs with nine victories in 14 games. Shubman Gill was also named as India's Test captain recently, replacing Rohit Sharma.
Gavaskar stated that Gill has learned a lot from last season, particularly with his batting, as he has allowed Sai Sudharsan to express himself.
"What he's learned from last year. Remember last year, he was a captain, and they didn't do too well. So, certainly I think what he's learned from the last year, we can see over here with the way he's been leading the team with Sai Sudarshan. When Sai Sudarshan is going well, he's quite happy to knock the singles and give him more of the strike," Gavaskar told official broadcasters as per India Today.
Even on the field, Gill has demonstrated good emotional control, according to Gavaskar. According to the Indian tradition, the GT captain supports the fielder and doesn't become irritated when there is a misfield or a dropped catch.
"And then also in the field, when you see a catch being dropped, there's a misfield, he doesn't get annoyed. He controls his emotions, which is so important because in a high-pressure game like this, you don't want to make the fielder even more nervous. He knows he's not done the right thing, and basically the way he goes and you know encourages and pats his team on the back, that's the kind of leader that he's been showing that he's with them all through," said Gavaskar.
Shubman Gill has also led GT from the front, scoring 649 runs in 14 matches this IPL 2025.
