GT lost to CSK by 83 runs in their final league match.
In their last league-stage match of the current season, the GT captain lamented how his team's poor start in the second innings essentially guaranteed the ensuing loss. He believed that whereas CSK entered the game with nothing to lose, his team was unable to handle the burden of expectations.
“I think the game pretty much went away from us in the powerplay, we never really came back. Chasing 230 is always a tricky target. Teams already eliminated have nothing to lose, and they come out all guns blazing.
We weren’t able to stay calm under pressure, and I think we gave in to pressure. It’s very important to control runs in the middle overs. If you are not going to do that, it’s going to be challenging. That’s where we were lacking in the last two games," Gill mentioned in the post-match presentation ceremony.
Regarding the impact of the loss, Gill acknowledged that it was difficult to accept but expressed excitement for the upcoming games, which will take place in Mohali, his hometown.
“This one would be a hard pill to swallow for us. The bright side is that we have two or three games left, so the boys will be motivated to play in Mohali. Fortunately for me, going back to my hometown… played a lot of cricket there and it’s going to be a really exciting," he concluded.
Now, GT has put their hopes of finishing in the top two of the league stages in jeopardy. They will now have to accept that they can only place second at best, and the victor of the Punjab Kings vs. Mumbai Indians game in Jaipur will take the top spot.
In order to finish in second place, GT would also hope that Royal Challengers Bengaluru loses their last league game.
