The 62nd match of the IPL 2025 was played between Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and Rajasthan Royals (RR) on May 20, 2025. This match was hosted by the Arun Jaitley Stadium in New Delhi. Sanju Samson of RR won the toss and chose to bowl first.
Ayush Mhatre made 43 in 20 balls with 8 fours and 1 six, while Devon Conway, Urvil Patel, R. Ashwin, and Ravindra Jadeja failed in the middle order. Dewald Brevis (42 in 25 balls), Shivam Dube (39), and MS Dhoni (16) pushed CSK to 187/8 in 20 overs.
Yudhvir Singh and Akash Madhwal picked 3 wickets each for RR.
Yashasvi Jaiswal led the way in the powerplay as he smoked 36 in 19 balls before falling to Anshul Kamboj. Then Vaibhav Suryavanshi took over and smacked 57 in 33 balls with 3 sixes and 3 fours and added 98 runs with Sanju Samson (41) for the second wicket.
Dhruv Jurel (31* in 12 balls) finished off the game in the 18th over as RR won the match by 6 wickets, reaching 188/4. R. Ashwin took 2 wickets for CSK.
With this RR completed, their IPL 2025 journey ended with 4 wins, 10 losses, and 8 points. On the other hand, CSK lost 10 games in an IPL season for the second time after IPL 2022. They still have one game left in the kitty.
CSK captain MS Dhoni conversed with the commentary team for the official broadcasters after the match. He talked about Dewald Brevis's innings and praised Anshul Kamboj for his bowling.
“If you look at the amount of runs we had put on the board, it was very good, but you have to see the wickets column as it puts pressure on the lower-middle order that you might not bat 20 overs. I think Brevis' innings were very nice; he was taking chances, and I feel the run rate was nice. That's the phase we want to improve slightly. I felt the run rate was up, but where we lacked was losing 1-2 extra wickets,” MS Dhoni told official broadcasters.
“He (Kamboj) is someone who doesn't get swing, but he gets some seam movement; the ball hits you harder than the speed gun suggests. He has taken the responsibility, and he is someone who can bowl good yorkers. That's one area where there's a hole for us; we don't want to give away too many runs in the first six overs. He has bowled 3 overs in the powerplay, which I feel is tougher when the ball isn't moving much and when the batsmen are well set,” he added.
MS Dhoni urged CSK batters to take the initiative and hit big inthe early overs. He also advised all the young batters to learn to get consistent and develop as they continue their journey.
“I think you need to look for consistency, which is hard to get when you are looking for a 200 strike rate. The batters need to back themselves. What is important is to be the same way as your first season for all young batters. You need to get consistent and be much more consistent; that's going to help you to develop as a batsman going forward,” MS Dhoni signed off.
CSK’s last IPL 2025 match will be on May 25 in Ahmedabad against GT.
