Shreyas Iyer had captained KKR to their third IPL title in 2024.
Sunil Gavaskar, legendary India opener, stated that Shreyas Iyer was not given the due credit for leading Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) to the IPL 2024 title win. And instead someone else received all the accolades.
Iyer’s KKR defeated Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) in the final of the IPL 2024 to make the purple and gold franchise three-time IPL champions. He also led from the front, scoring 351 runs from 14 innings at an average of 39 and with two fifties.
Iyer had a great season with KKR, but the team didn't want him. He was then sold to Punjab Kings for an incredible Rs 26.75 crore during the mega auction. Punjab, which is playing at its best under his direction, is having another fantastic season.
Gavaskar recently commended Iyer's leadership abilities, pointing to his success with KKR, but claimed that all the credit went "somewhere else" despite his subtle on-field choices.
“He didn't get the credit for the IPL victory last season. All the plaudits were given to someone else. It's the captain, who plays a major role in what's happening in the middle, and not someone sitting in the dugout. See, this year he's getting fair credit. No one is giving all the credit to Ricky Ponting,” Gavaskar said on Star Sports.
PBKS have fun 7 matches out of 11 played in IPL 2025 and are in race for the IPL 2025 playoffs. They are currently sitting third on the points table with 15 points from 11 matches. With four fifties to his name and 405 runs from 11 innings at an average of 50.62, Iyer has also maintained his strong form from the ICC Champions Trophy 2025.
With a victory in the forthcoming match against the Rajasthan Royals (RR) in Jaipur, the Punjab Kings have a fantastic opportunity to move up to the top of the points table. They have only won one of the six games thus far, so they will be facing their historical record.
