GT defeated MI by 3 wickets via DLS method.
In the aftermath of the IPL 2025 match between Mumbai Indians (MI) and Gujarat Titans (GT), in which GT won the game by 3 wickets via the DLS method, MI’s Hardik Pandya and GT’s Ashish Nehra were penalized. Nehra was sanctioned for behaviour "contrary to the spirit of the game".
As is customary in the IPL, MI had to bring an extra fielder into the 30-yard circle for the last over, the 19th, of the chase in the stop-start second half of the match between MI and GT, where rain forced the players to leave the field and return a few times. GT needed 15 runs to get off that Deepak Chahar over and over the line off the last ball.
Hardik Pandya and MI XI were fined for a slow over-rate offense. Since this was MI's second offense under his leadership this season, Hardik was fined INR 24 lakh. Each of his teammates was fined INR 6 lakh or 25% of their individual match fees, whichever was lower.
Although Nehra's offense was not specifically mentioned in the IPL release, the former fast bowler was clearly agitated during the rain-shortened game and was seen interacting animatedly with the on-field officials.
"Ashish Nehra, Head Coach, Gujarat Titans, has been fined 25 per cent of his match fees and has also accumulated one demerit point for breaching the IPL Code of Conduct. He admitted to the Level 1 offence under Article 2.20 - which pertains to the conduct that is contrary to the spirit of the game - and accepted the match referee's sanction," the IPL announced.
This is the first time a coach has been penalized with a demerit point for a breach of the IPL's code.
