Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) skipper Ajinkya Rahane sustained an injury to his right hand while fielding at extra covers during their 14-run win over Delhi Capitals (DC) at the Arun Jaitley Stadium on Tuesday (April 29).
The incident unfolded on the first delivery of the 11th over when Rahane tried to stop a drive from Faf du Plessis off the bowling of Andre Russell, but the ball deflected off his finger as the DC opener completed a single.
Rahane was in visible pain as he started shaking his hand immediately and walked off the field in the company of KKR physio.
Rahane didn’t return to the field and with KKR deputy Venkatesh Iyer being replaced as Impact Sub by Vaibhav Arora, all-rounder Sunil Narine performed the leadership role. KKR went on to successfully defend 205 with DC managing 190/9 in their allotted 20 overs.
During the post-match presentation, Rahane addressed the query about his injury, saying: “Not bad. I’ll be OK. I’ll be fine."
According to ESPNCricinfo, Rahane will be assessed by KKR medical staff on Wednesday (April 30) morning to determine the extent of his injury.
The win was KKR’s fourth of the season in 10 outings and they remain seventh on the 10-team points table. Despite the win, Rahane felt they were 15 runs short of what would have been the ideal total.
“204 on that wicket was good, but I thought we were 15 runs short, frankly. We were going really well as a batting unit. But again, you’re chasing 204, you know as a fielding team, you are one or two wickets away, and that’s what happened," Rahane said.
“When Sunil came into bowl and picked up two wickets, and when they lost three wickets in the middle, I thought that was the game for us. He’s been a champion bowler for this franchise. A match-winner. As a captain, good to have him and Varun (Chakaravarthy)," he added.
The defending champions will next face Rajasthan Royals at the Eden Gardens on Sunday (May 4).
