Suryavanshi lit up the Sawai Mansingh Stadium as he became the youngest-ever centurion in IPL history.
Former India batter Ajay Jadeja slammed Gujarat Titans (GT) skipper Shubman Gill for his ‘lucky day’ comment on Rajasthan Royals (RR) opener Vaibhav Suryavanshi's historic century in Jaipur on Monday (April 28).
The 14-year-old lit up the Sawai Mansingh Stadium as he became the youngest-ever centurion in IPL history. The southpaw reached the landmark off 35 balls and eventually scored 101 off 38 deliveries (7 fours and 11 sixes), paving the way for RR’s eight-wicket victory in the chase of 210 with 25 balls to spare.
After the loss, Gill was asked to share his thoughts on Suryavanshi's knock, and it was then the GT captain said that the left-hander had a lucky day and made the most of his chances.
“It was his (lucky) day. His hitting was just tremendous, and he made full use of his day,” said Gill while speaking to the host broadcaster.
Jadeja was not one bit pleased with Gill dismissing the knock like this. “But a 14-year-old to believe in himself, the amount that he believes in himself, and to take it that far, even if it's, you know, one day like some player on television just said, oh, it was just his lucky day,” Jadeja told JioStar.
During the course of his whirlwind knock, Vaibhav Suryavanshi broke Yusuf Pathan's 15-year-old record for the fastest IPL hundred by an Indian. His ton is the second fastest in the cash-rich league after Chris Gayle's century in 30 balls for Royal Challengers Bengaluru in 2013.
Suryavanshi put on 166 runs for the opening wicket with Yashasvi Jaiswal, who remained unbeaten on 70 off 40 balls.
"All of us who played cricket, dreamt of cricket in a certain way, either in our drawing rooms or when we were playing with our friends. This is what you dream of. At 14 and 15, all of us must have dreamt different things. But this is what you actually dream about. This man has gone out there and lived that dream there. There's power. He'll be analysed a hundred times," said Jadeja.
"There are moments after seven overs that you have a strategic timeout. Great credit to Rahul Dravid and Vikram Rathour and the team, who have allowed him to just keep flowing and keep blossoming. And I think it's the mindset that blows me away more than anything," he added.
