Bumrah has been out of competitive action due to lower back injury since January this year.
Jasprit Bumrah’s absence is being felt in the Mumbai Indians (MI) playing XI as the five-time champions have lost two out of their three matches in the ongoing IPL 2025 season so far.
Bumrah has been out of competitive action since the fifth BGT Test against Australia in Sydney, where he sustained a lower back injury. The fast bowler didn’t feature in India’s triumphant Champions Trophy 2025 campaign as he failed to recover in time.
Bumrah was initially expected to join the MI squad by April 1, but now a report published in TOI claims that the right-arm quick might remain out of action for a little longer.
According to the report, the BCCI medical team, which is carefully monitoring Bumrah at the Centre of Excellence, is in no hurry to rush him back as it could lead to long-term repercussions, the most prominent being the risk of a stress fracture.
Moreover, India are slated to play five Tests in England right after the IPL. Hence, the BCCI medical team has decided to treat the ace pacer very cautiously.
Pacer Akash Deep’s return has also been pushed back by at least a week, the report further stated.
Akash, who was signed by Lucknow Super Giants during the mega auction last year, is nursing a back injury as well.
“Bumrah’s injury is a bit more serious. The medical team wants to ensure he doesn’t suffer a stress fracture. Bumrah himself is being careful. He is bowling at the CoE but it could take longer to get back in full swing. No definite timeline has been set yet, but one hopes he gets back by mid-April. Akash Deep too hopes to get back by April 10,” a BCCI source said, as quoted by TOI.
Another LSG acer Mayank Yadav is also on the same timeline as Akash and Bumrah. As per the updated SOP (Standard Operating Procedure), the bowling coach at the CoE will have to give the final approval for a player to be deemed fit.
