Abhishek Sharma had a breakout season for Sunrisers Hyderabad in the last IPL season.
His exploits in IPL 2024 also earned him the India cap. Abhishek slammed a century in his maiden T20I tour of Zimbabwe and followed it stunning performances against South Africa and England.
As Indian team builds towards the 2026 T20 World Cup, the left-handed opener will be a crucial cog in the team's plan.
Meanwhile, former Indian cricketer Yograj Singh said that when he first saw Abhishek Sharma playing, he warned Yuvraj of controlling his "nightlife" and having his focus entirely on cricket. He admitted that Yuvraj was strict about following instructions.
Hailing from Punjab, Abhishek shares a special bond with Yuvraj. In fact, the youngster had trained under Yuvraj during COVID lockdown and has often given him credit for success at the highest level.
"When Abhishek was playing, I said if you could control his nightlife, Yuvraj did exactly that, and did not let him go here and there. He kept the shoes in his hands...the slippers that he talks about...so he turned out okay. Wild horses need to be tamed by catching their hair firmly," Yograj said while speaking to Taruwar Kohli on his podcast, 'Find a Way'.
According to Abhishek Sharma's former SRH captain Kane Williamson, he can alter his shots at the last moment while still generating immense power and finding gaps all over the field.
"He has got a great bat swing and is a natural timer of the ball," Williamson said, as quoted from ESPNcricinfo.
"He has got that gift of power, but it's not through brute force. It is through timing the ball and playing all around the ground, which is a superpower in a lot of ways. It's a little bit like Heinrich Klaasen. I mean different with the brute strength but the ability to change your options and score pretty much all around the ground. Changing your shot at the last minute - because you're not overhitting - is a skill that not many have," he added.
Abhishek Sharma is currently in the midst of the IPL 2025 season, having been retained by SRH for INR 14 crore. He has registered scores of 24 and 6 in the first two matches so far.
