The BCCI is leaving no stone unturned to ensure that the IPL 2025 mega auction turns out to be both exciting and successful for all the 10 franchises involved. Sports Tak has reported that franchises will be allowed to retain 5 players with one Right to Match (RTM) card.

Also, the purse of the franchises has swollen to INR 120 Cr each. Notably, there will be no restrictions on how many Indian or foreign players can be kept.

During the last mega auction in 2022, the IPL enabled teams to maintain up to four players. Now that a three-year cycle has been completed and another big auction is approaching, teams have differing views on player retention, which consists of five players and one RTM card.

Earlier, there were allegations that some teams wanted to maintain up to eight players, while others were OK with four or five.

Also, a franchise can use the Right To Match (RTM) for 3 players if it retains only 3 players.

Here is the breakdown of the retention slab for IPL 2025:

1st retention: INR 18cr
2nd retention: INR 14cr
3rd retention: INR 11cr
4th retention: INR 18cr
5th retention: INR 14cr

The IPL 2025 retention policy, which allows for five retentions and one right-to-match card, has also set a new record for the most retentions in the league's history. In the 2018 auction, clubs were allowed to keep three players and received two right-to-match cards.

However, the right-to-match provision was removed in the IPL 2022 mega auction, which allowed clubs to keep four players.

The IPL Governing Council hasn't yet given any update on the IPL 2025 auction dates and venue. However, it is expected to be held in late November, likely taking place outside India.
