Ruturaj Gaikwad put on a show with the bat and became the first Chennai Super Kings (CSK) skipper to hit a century in Match 39 of the IPL 2024 season at Chepauk on Tuesday (April 23).

Asked to bat first, the defending champions lost Ajinkya Rahane in the very first over for just 1 while Daryl Mitchell (11) and Ravindra Jadeja (16) also fell cheaply.

However, Gaikwad played a captain’s knock as he joined forces with Shivam Dube to not only bring CSK of trouble but also put them in a commanding position. The duo took the LSG bowling attack to the cleaners during their 104-run stand for the fourth wicket.

While Gaikwad notched up his second IPL hundred off 56 deliveries, Dube continued his brilliant run of form and went on to slam a half-century off 22 balls. Their partnership ended with two balls remaining in the innings as Dube was run out for 66 off 27 balls, including three boundaries and seven sixes.

On the other hand, Gaikwad finished with 108 not out off 60 balls (12 fours and 3 sixes) whereas MS Dhoni hit the final delivery for a boundary to propel CSK to a mammoth 210/4 in 20 overs.

For their jaw-dropping display, Ruturaj Gaikwad and Shivam Dube received rich praise from the cricket fraternity on social media platform X.
