In a surprising development, MS Dhoni decided to step down as the captain of Chennai Super Kings (CSK) on the eve of the upcoming Indian Premier League 2024 (IPL 2024) on Thursday, March 21.

The legendary captain and wicketkeeper-batter passed on the leadership baton to Ruturaj Gaikwad ahead of the upcoming IPL 2024, starting on March 22 with CSK taking on the RCB at Chepauk Stadium.

While the timing of this captaincy change may surprise many, it is being said that the CSK had been grooming Gaikwad for the captaincy behind the scenes. However, the five-time IPL-winning captain Dhoni will remain an integral part of CSK both as a leader and a player.

Aakash Chopra wrote on X: “Whoaaa…and just like that he’s not the captain anymore. Love the way Mahi operates…no fuss whatsoever. But remember…he’ll still be the Leader. Once a leader, always a leader.”

On the other hand, former Indian all-rounder Pathan paid tribute to Dhoni’s legacy as CSK skipper and wished all the luck to new captain Gaikwad for his new journey in the IPL.

Irfan Pathan wrote on X: “In the ever-expanding galaxy of cricket, MS Dhoni’s legacy as CSK’s leader shines bright, akin to a supernova, illuminating the path for the franchise with unparalleled brilliance and allure. His leadership will be remembered for decades to come.  Good luck Ruturaj for your new responsibility as a CSK leader.”
