Former Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) keeper-batter Parthiv Patel has made a startling revelation that Virat Kohli, who was the RCB captain before stepping down in IPL 2021, had brushed aside his suggestion to have a look at Jasprit Bumrah, who was a rookie then in Gujarat Ranji team.

Kohli had taken over as RCB captain in 2013 and continued to lead till 2021 without ever winning a trophy. IPL 2019 was the last time Parthiv Patel played in the richest T20 league, retiring from the game in 2020.

Patel in a conversation on Cricbuzz revealed that he had suggested Virat Kohli, the RCB captain to have a look at Jasprit Bumrah back in 2014 and possibly bring him into the fold for the Indian Premier League. However, Kohli refused to entertain his suggestion and the rest is history.

"In 2014, when I was at RCB, I told Kohli there's this bowler named Bumrah. Have a look at him. Virat replied saying 'Chhor na yaar. Ye Bumrah-Vumrah kya karenge?' (Leave it. What will such players do?" Parthiv said on Cricbuzz.

IPL 2022: ‘We would just like to go out there and express ourselves’, says RR skipper Sanju Samson

Parthiv knew Jasprit Bumrah was special given that it was under his captaincy that the fast bowler made his Ranji Trophy debut for Gujarat. He saw the pacer evolve and trouble the batters thanks to his unique bowling action.

Bumrah was then picked in the IPL 2013 auction by the Mumbai Indians and under the tutelage of captain Rohit Sharma and guidance from Sri Lanka’s Lasith Malinga, Bumrah turned out to be a world-class bowler for both MI and the Indian team.

"When he was first picked, Bumrah played Ranji Trophy for the first 2-3 years. 2013 was his first year, and he didn't have a good season in 2014. In 2015, it was so bad that there were discussions going on that he might have to be sent back home mid-season. But he slowly began improving and Mumbai Indians really backed him. It was his own hard work and such backing that really brought out the best in him," Parthiv Patel said.

Bumrah has 130 wickets in 107 IPL matches and recently completed 10 years in the Mumbai Indians.
