The Pakistan journalist wrote that there was no rival in the market when IPL had started.
Taking to Twitter, the Pakistan journalist wrote that there was no rival in the market when IPL had started while PSL gained worldwide popularity despite competing with many leagues across the globe.
“No comparison between PSL and IPL! PSL started in 2016 while IPL inaugurated in 2008. However one has to admit PSL gained worldwide popularity more quicker in an era when other boards had introduced their leagues too whereas there was no competitor in the market when IPL was born,” his tweet reads.
To which, Uthappa replied, “IPL created the market!!” and the comment is drawing a lot of attention on the micro-blogging site.
Recently, PCB chairman Ramiz Raja had said that they are contemplating the idea to replace the PSL draft system to recruit players for the franchises with the auction model that has been employed by IPL since its inaugural edition.
According to Ramiz, such a switch will help their T20 tournament build enough financial muscle that it will be put into the same bracket as the Indian Premier League.
“This is a game of money. When the cricket economy grows in Pakistan, our respect will rise. The main driver of that financial economy is the PSL. If we take the PSL to auction model, increase the purse, then I’ll put it in the IPL bracket. And then we’ll see who goes to play the IPL over the PSL," Ramiz was quoted as saying by ESPNcricinfo.
