Sunrisers Hyderabad retained three players.
November 30th saw the final announcement of retained players by each of the original eight franchises in the Indian Premier League (IPL) ahead of the IPL 2022 mega auction. Two new teams will make their debut as well, making the upcoming IPL edition a 10-team competition.
As per BCCI rules, each team is allowed to retain a maximum of four players. These can be in two different combinations while picking their four players to retain: three Indians and one overseas, or two Indians and two overseas. The three Indians retained by franchises can all be capped, all uncapped or a mix of both.
Meanwhile, Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH), who won the IPL title in 2016 edition, has a horrid season in IPL 2021, where they finished last on the points table, winning just three matches.
But more than that, they were involved in the controversial treatment of their Australian star David Warner, who was replaced as captain in the first half of the tournament by New Zealand’s Kane Williamson. Warner was also dropped from the playing XI as he lost the favor and trust of teammanagement.
SRH announced that they had retained Kane Williamson for INR 14 crores and that he will captain the side in IPL 2022. Other players to be retained by the SRH franchise were uncapped Indian duo of Abdul Samad (INR 4 crores) and pacer Umran Malik (INR 4 crores).
Rashid Khan’s name missing from the retention list was a huge surprise for everyone. The SRH CEO K Shammi revealed that Rashid Khan wanted to be in the auction as the two sides couldn’t come to an agreement on the retention price.
SRH will have INR 68 crores in purse for the IPL 2022 auction.
