Virat Kohli stepped down as RCB's skipper after IPL 2021.
Former Indian cricketer Irfan Pathan feels that Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) should not give a leadership role to Glenn Maxwell as he’s a free-flowing player and they should rather look for their skipper from the auction pool.
Despite the Test series going on between India and New Zealand, the news related to IPL 2022 has grabbed the eyeballs of many. The franchises have been given the deadline of 30th November to submit their retention list.
Each franchise can retain a total of four players. They can opt for different combinations like three Indians and one overseas or two Indians and two overseas players. The two new teams can pick a maximum of three unretained players.

Talking about Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB), apart from naming four retentions they will also face the challenge of finding the new skipper as Virat Kohli will play only as a player in IPL 2022.
Referring to the same, Irfan Pathan feels that RCB should look for a skipper from the auction pool. He pointed out that they can’t give Glenn Maxwell the captaincy as he’s a free-flowing player and they should not give him responsibility.
“I think someone from the auction. Because whatever the 4 players are in my head, Virat is obviously not going to captain he has announced that, Glenn Maxwell is there, but you do not want to give him the captaincy because he is kind of a free-flowing cricketer and you do not want to give him that kind of responsibility. You want him to play freely,” Irfan Pathan said on Star Sports.
Pathan said that Yuzvendra Chahal and Mohammed Siraj might be the other two retentions for RCB and they need to find the leadership option in the auction.
“The third is Chahal, who is a bowler. The fourth one is a topic of discussion but I will go with Siraj. So you might to find leadership in that but you might find it in the auction. They need to work hard on that part," he said.
Pathan said Siraj is a more 'complete package' than Harshal Patel, arguing that the former can bowl in every situation of the game. He remarked that Siraj will be a more long-term option for RCB.

“A lot of people will be thinking about Harshal Patel, he was the Purple Cap winner, but when you look at the complete package in Mohammad Siraj who can bowl with the new ball and deliver outstanding yorkers, he has got pace as well. So you might be looking at a more long-term option. I certainly think it's Siraj,” he said.
Irfan Pathan further heaped rich praise on Yuzvendra Chahal, saying that on the ground like Chinnaswamy spinner needs to bowl with a big heart and not many spinners have the kind of impact that the latter has had on the ground.
“In Chinnaswamy, you need a spinner who bowls with a big heart. And Chahal has got a big heart. He takes wicket and knows the pitch in and out. Not many spinners come to Chinnaswamy and take that kind of wicket what Chahal has given. You do not want to lose a bowler like him,” he said.
