Chennai Super Kings have decided to retain their captain, MS Dhoni, for three more seasons, Indian Express has reported on November 24, 2021. This comes after Dhoni had said in CSK’s IPL 2021 trophy title win celebration in Chennai that his last game in IPL will be in Chepauk.

As per BCCI rules, each team is allowed to retain a maximum of four players. These can be in two different combinations while picking their four players to retain: three Indians and one overseas, or two Indians and two overseas. The three Indians retained by franchises can all be capped, all uncapped, or a mix of both.

Unlike the previous big auction ahead of the 2018 season, there will be no right-to-match cards (RTM) at the auction. The franchises have to submit their lists of retained players by November 30 and the IPL will have its mega auction next month.

The Chennai Super Kings have also reportedly retained Ravindra Jadeja and opener Ruturaj Gaikwad. As for the one foreign player, they are in talks with England’s Moeen Ali to come on board. If Ali doesn’t agree to stay, CSK will have left-arm medium-pacer Sam Curran as their fourth retained player.

As BCCI secretary Jay Shah had stated that the next season of IPL will be played in India, CSK feels Ali could be a handy player on the slow, turning Chennai wicket.

On the other hand, Delhi Capitals has retained wicketkeeper-batsman Rishabh Pant, all-rounder Akshar Patel, Prithvi Shaw, and pacer Anrich Nortje. Indian Express also mentioned that Shreyas Iyer wanted to captain the DC side, but the management was keen on having Rishabh Pant as their captain.

Mumbai Indians are understood to retain Rohit Sharma and Jasprit Bumrah and talks are on with Kieron Pollard to stay as well. The franchise wants to buy Suryakumar Yadav from the auction pool while mulling to retain young Ishan Kishan.

Two new teams Sanjiv Goenka’s RPSG group and CVC Capitals (though they haven’t been given the green signal yet from the board) have begun approaching a few top Indian players.

One of those top players is KL Rahul, who is likely to captain Goenka’s new Lucknow-based franchise. It is apparent from the report that Rahul has parted ways with the Punjab Kings franchise and accepted Goenka’s offer. Also, Suryakumar Yadav was approached by the new franchise, but he is yet to respond.

Kolkata Knight Riders are likely to retain their two all-rounders Sunil Narine and Andre Russell while they want to keep Varun Chakravarthy too. However, it seems discussions are on pertaining to whether they will retain Shubman Gill or Venkatesh Iyer.
