West Indies batsman Shimron Hetmyer has said that working with Australian legend Ricky Ponting helped him play the pull shot better. The southpaw said that he can now tackle the short ball strategy used against him by pacers.

Ricky Ponting is the head coach of Delhi Capitals (DC) in the Indian Premier League (IPL) and Shimron Hetmyer was signed by DC in the IPL 2020 auction after he was released by Royal Challengers Bangalore. Hetmyer explained how Ponting helped change his mindset while facing short balls and helped him improve his pull shot.

“He (Ricky Ponting) helped me with my pull shot in 2020 when we were in Dubai. He showed me how he played the pull shot and how he went about doing it, his thought process, and stuff like that. That really helped me. That year, that was something that the bowlers did to me. Getting that advice from him really helped me to face some of those balls," said Shimron Hetmyer on the Caribbean Podcast.

Ponting is regarded as one of the greatest players of the pull shot. Hetmyer praised Ponting and said that a player could learn a lot out of the legend by speaking and asking questions to him.

“He is someone you could learn a lot from if you sit and listen to him. You could ask him any questions and he will help. That’s what you want as a young player going into any team. Even him throwing a few balls at you, that really helps,” he said.
