India all-rounder Washington Sundar is set to miss the upcoming five-match Test series in England owing to a ligament injury. He has now been advised complete rest for at least the next one month. This also puts his participation in the upcoming second phase of IPL 2021 in UAE in jeopardy.

The off-spinner complained of pain in the index finger during the ICC World Test Championship final and the pain only aggravated in the practice match between Select County XI and Indians.

The youngster will fly back home from England in the coming days and might have to undergo a surgery if required. The injury is said to be a common injury in finger-spinners and rest and workload management will be the best way to heal it. He will report to the NCA to train and prove his fitness after recovering.

Sundar is in the reckoning for ICC T20 World Cup 2021 squad and will hope to recover before the tournament starts.

The Tamil Nadu spinner’s participation in the second phase of IPL 2021 beginning on 17 September is currently in the air. Everything depends on how quickly the injury heals. His workload will have to be gradually increased and participation in the IPL 2021 will only increase the workload drastically.

Sundar is one of the key spinners for Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) along with Yuzvendra Chahal. Spinners will come into play in UAE as the tournament progresses and RCB will only hope that the off-spinner recovers and proves his fitness in time.

Sundar has had an increased workload ever since IPL 2020. He toured Australia and made an impressive test debut at Brisbane. He has been in the Indian squad ever since. The priority will now be to recover before the ICC T20 World Cup 2021.
