The BCCI has finalized the plans for the mega IPL 2022 auction, as per reports of the Times of India. This auction is expected to be a huge one given that two new teams will be added to the mix in 2022 and the number of players will be increased as well.

The BCCI has reportedly put in new rules for the player retentions, increment in salary purses, and fresh media rights tender.

As per new rules of player retention, each franchise will be allowed to retain only four players, but there are a few conditions that the franchises would have to follow- they can either retain three Indians and one overseas player or two Indians and two overseas players.

The salary deduction, in the existing structure, is stipulated as follows: Rs 15 crs, Rs 11 crs, and Rs 7 crs if three players are retained; Rs 12.5 crs and Rs 8.5 crs if two players are retained; and Rs 12.5 crs if only one player is retained.

Therefore, Team COC takes a look at the players that three-time IPL champions Chennai Super Kings (CSK), might look to retain ahead of the IPL 2022 auction.

The first two choices pretty much choose themselves as MS Dhoni and Suresh Raina have been the pillars of the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) franchise right from the beginning, and though Raina missed the IPL 2020 due to personal reasons, he is back in IPL 2021 and things are normal again for the team.

MS Dhoni, who turns 40 on July 7, 2021, has not revealed anything about his retirement, but it seems like that IPL 2022 might be his swansong as the tournament will see two more teams will be added to the mix and it’s a possibility that the tournament might be played in India in front of fans with COVID pandemic hopefully receding.

Suresh Raina might be retained for a simple reason, to take over as captain from MS Dhoni, when the great man calls time on his IPL career. The left-hander is just 34 years old and might serve the team for the next three years.

The next two retentions are where CSK team management might have to think a lot. One option to be retained is Ravindra Jadeja, who had been excellent for the team with both the bat and the ball for the past 2-3 seasons. The 34-year-old has matured as a cricketer a lot and is expected to be assistance to the next captain after MS Dhoni.

Coming to the last retention, a foreign player, CSK is most likely to invest in the future, and who better than Sam Curran to put their faith into. The 23-year-old has impressed one and all with both his batting and bowling abilities and has taken on challenges of opening the batting as well and acting as a finisher when needed.

Curran may also come in handy if considered for captaincy in the future and is overall a great investment for the Chennai franchise.
