IPL 2021: I don't rate David Warner highly as a skipper- Sehwag slams SRH captain for his poor mindset

Former Indian cricketer Virender Sehwag feels that Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) captain David Warner played with a poor mindset and his slowness at the crease resulted in a low total as they suffered 7 wicket loss against Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in an IPL 2021 encounter.

David Warner played a knock of 57 runs off 55 balls against CSK in their sixth match of IPL 14 at Arun Jaitley Stadium, Delhi. Even though Warner notched up a fifty but the southpaw wasn’t able to time the ball perfectly during the knock and was a far cry from his usual destructive style.

His sluggish 55-ball 57 saw him stay at the crease till the 18th over, but he couldn’t make the most of a good batting wicket.

IPL 2021: “I take full responsibility for the way I batted," says David Warner after SRH's loss to CSK

Talking to Cricbuzz, Virender Sehwag said the partnership between Manish Pandey and David Warner would have been a good one against Chennai but it was not at all suited to the batting-friendly wicket in Delhi.

“Had the game been played in Chennai, it would have been a great partnership, at a scoring rate of 8 runs per over. But it was Delhi and not Chepauk. 171 has to be a low total because it was a perfect batting track. Kane Williamson had no problems in getting runs which means the wicket was good,” Virender Sehwag told Cricbuzz.

Sehwag said that the thought process of David Warner was extremely poor and his approach wasn’t up to the mark as the Delhi pitch was batsman-friendly.

“The thought process of David Warner was extremely poor. You cannot expect slow innings from him. The approach wasn’t up to the mark. He should have batted without any hesitation. The wicket was good and the ball was coming to the bat. If Manish Pandey can score a half-century off 36 balls and Warner gets a run-a-ball fifty. More runs could have been scored,” he said.

Sehwag pointed out that Warner should’ve taken some more chances and played an attacking game because the likes of Kane Williamson, Kedar Jadhav could hit big shots.

IPL 2021: "Dropping Manish Pandey was the selectors' decision," says SRH coach Trevor Bayliss

“Warner could have taken a chance if he was set after playing 30-40 balls. He should have scored at least 30 runs in the next 50 balls. He knew that the likes of Williamson, Jadhav, and Shankar would come next and they can hit big shots. So, he could have played an attacking game.

Virender Sehwag further said that he doesn’t rate David Warner highly as a skipper. He added that had Kane Williamson been the skipper we could have seen him doing something different.

“Well, I don’t rate him highly as a skipper. But he used to do a few good things earlier which he couldn’t against CSK. If Williamson had been the captain, we could have seen him doing something different. Because he knows the fact if you don’t go for wickets, you won’t win the game,” he concluded.
