According to former India skipper Mohammed Azharuddin, the wicket-keeper batsman Rishabh Pant might be the front-runner to lead the Indian team in the coming years.

The left-hand batsman was appointed to lead the Delhi Capitals in this year’s Indian Premier League (IPL) after skipper Shreyas Iyer hurt his left shoulder during the recently concluded limited-overs series against England.

The Hyderabad-based batsman who has played 99 Tests and over 300 ODIs for India, said that he won’t be surprised to see Rishabh Pant being considered to lead the Indian side in the near future in his recent tweet.

Rajat Bhatia says MS Dhoni was the reason for RPS reaching the IPL 2017 final, not Steve Smith

Rishabh Pant has had such fabulous few months, establishing himself in all formats. It won't come as a surprise if the selectors see him as a front-runner for Indian captaincy in near future. His attacking cricket will stand India in good stead in times to come,” he tweeted.

Pant has been in good nick since the Australia series and has shown some great signs in the limited-overs series against England, so it will be interesting to see the southpaw leading his side in the 14th edition of the Indian Premier League.

Delhi Capitals will begin their IPL 2021 campaign against Chennai Super Kings (CSK) at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on April 10.
