Gambhir isn't expecting CSK to release lots of players from the squad for next season.
Chennai Super Kings (CSK) are in desperate need of making a strong team ahead of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2021 to stand a chance this season. They had a forgetful season in the year 2020 and the cricket pundits suggested the franchise needs to revamp for success.
Former IPL winning captain Gautam Gambhir has commented on skipper MS Dhoni's possible tactics going forward in the next season. He feels Dhoni will only focus on building the squad for the upcoming IPL and not the next three seasons.
"If you release a lot of players, you also need to see what is available in the auction. I agree we have been talking for the last two or three years that CSK has an aging squad, no doubt it was an aging squad as well with the likes of Shane Watson, Dwayne Bravo, and MS Dhoni," Gambhir said on Star Sports show Cricket Connected.

Gambhir feels Dhoni can still make CSK succeed in IPL. "But the way they performed and I have been saying for a number of years that MS Dhoni has this quality, people talk how MS Dhoni has made CSK such a successful side in the IPL, that he only concentrates on that year," said Gambhir.
"He will not concentrate to make the squad for the next three years, not at all. So MS Dhoni's quality is going to remain the same this year as well, what best squad and best opportunity can win them the title this year, he will do that only. So, I don't feel they are going to release too many players unless and until a lot of players are coming in the auction whom they are targeting," he explained.
BCCI has set a deadline to release the retention list for all franchises on January 20. There will be no mega auction this year.
