If the tension between both countries doesn’t ease off soon, the BCCI may have to let go of Chinese smartphone maker Vivo as the title sponsor of the Indian Premier League. Notably, the Indian board gets INR 440 crore annually from Vivo for the five-year deal slated to expire in 2022.
Meanwhile, a source within the board has said that BCCI’s decision regarding Chinese sponsorship in the IPL will be made keeping in mind the ''best interest of cricket and country''.
"As of now, no date has been decided for the IPL review meeting. There are other issues that BCCI is looking into. The franchises are entitled to their opinion. We will make a decision which will be in the best interest of cricket and country. The meeting will take place once we work on all surrounding issues of IPL," the source told ANI.
There is an anti-Chinese movement that has triggered across India since the border clash at Galwan valley on June 15. In a first such clash in four decades between the two countries, 20 India soldiers got martyred. Since then, calls have been made to boycott all Chinese products in the nation.
On Monday (June 29), the Indian government decided to put a ban on 59 Chinese apps including TikTok and UC Browser.
The Ministry of Information Technology had said in a release that it decided to block the applications in view of the information available that "they are engaged in activities which is prejudicial to sovereignty and integrity of India, defence of India, the security of the state and public order".
