The matches will be played during the IPL 2020 Playoff week.
Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) on Saturday (February 29) has confirmed Jaipur’s Sawai Mansingh Stadium as the venue for the upcoming third edition of the Women's T20 Challenge 2020.
The board has also announced one major change for the tournament as the event will now see four teams competing across a total of seven matches in the tournament to be played during the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2020 Playoff week at the Sawai Mansingh Stadium.
However, apart from the name of the newest team in the Women’s IPL 2020, the fixtures and teams, including foreign players, are yet to be announced.
The tournament started in 2018 with the one-off game between a Harmanpreet Kaur-led Supernovas and Smriti Mandhana-led Trailblazers while the 2019 edition saw the addition of IPL Velocity side.
The BCCI said in a release, “As part of its ongoing commitment to growing the women’s game, BCCI is pleased to announce the 2020 Women’s T20 Challenge. The tournament which started in 2018 and was a huge success, further garnered all the right eyeballs in the year to follow.”
It further reads, “The 2019 games, comprising three teams were played at Sawai Mansingh Stadium, Jaipur during the IPL Playoff and Finals week. The tournament was played with great intensity which saw the winner of the 2019 WT20 Challenge being decided over the last ball of the match.
2020 aims to be no different and this edition will see a 4th team added to the tournament. The WT20 Challenge this year will feature some of the world’s best women cricketers and will have 7 matches played during the IPL Playoff week at Sawai Mansingh Stadium, Jaipur. Like the previous editions, this year’s Women’s T20 Challenge too promises to be an exciting prospect.”
Noteworthy, the 13th edition of the IPL 2020 will get underway from March 29 with defending champions Mumbai Indians taking on the Chennai Super Kings at the Wankhede Stadium in the tournament opener.
