Ponting has been the coach of Delhi Capitals since IPL 2018.
Delhi Capitals coach Ricky Ponting has identified new recruit wicket-keeper Alex Carey as a match-winner for them in IPL 2020.
Ponting was watching Alex Carey in the Big Bash League bat at No.4 for Adelaide Strikers and appreciated the cricketing brain of the wicket-keeper batsman-cum-captain for the Strikers. He believes that Carey can win a lot of games for the Capitals in the IPL.
Ponting told cricket.com.au. “This role that he’s playing now is the exact reason he became so appealing to me and the Delhi Capitals.”
The former Australian captain has studied Carey’s game and also pointed out that he is a good player of spin bowling, has a good cricketing brain and maintains calm in pressure situations that allow him to think well. However, he maintains that Rishabh Pant will be their premier wicket-keeper and Carey will come in when Pant gets injured or has to sit out.
“He’s a good player of spin, and he’s got such a good cricket brain and a sensible head on his shoulders that I feel he’ll be able to get us across the line in a lot of games (next) year. And also if we have an injury to our current wicket-keeper, Rishabh Pant, then obviously he can fill that role nicely for us as well,” he added.
Like most of the cricket fans, Ricky Ponting can’t wait for the next season of the IPL. He considers the IPL and the BBL as the big two in the world.
He said, “I can’t wait. I’ve got a big smile on my face thinking about it. It’s one of those tournaments you really want to be part of, as is the Big Bash, and I see those as probably the big two in the world.”
