KKR defeated KXIP easily to top the IPL 2019 table.
Ashwin ran Buttler out as he was backing up too far and enraged the whole cricketing fraternity with his actions which were deemed by many as against the spirit of the game given that he hadn’t warned Buttler and seemingly waited for him to leave the crease before running him out. Ashwin might have won the game, but lost a lot of face with his actions.
Now, his team was again involved in a controversial moment, in their game against Kolkata Knight Riders in Eden Gardens on Thursday. First, was the no-ball incident in which Andre Russell received a lifeline as there were only three fielders inside the 30-yard circle. This was Ashwin’s fault, who was left baffled and it changed the course of the game, with Russell smacking 48 runs in 17 balls and taking KKR over 200.
The biggest controversy in the game came when in the sixth over of Punjab’s innings when Mayank Agarwal and Sarfaraz Khan were at the crease and Nitish Rana, who was standing at covers, allowed Agarwal the single and threw the ball casually towards Russell, who was standing at mid-on. The Windies all-rounder lost the ball in the lights and the ball ran away towards the fence.
The umpire decided that it was overthrown and signaled a boundary which left KKR skipper Dinesh Karthik, Robin Uthappa and others baffled. Even R Ashwin got involved in the matter, having a chat with officials near the boundary lines. Karthik wasn’t pleased that the overthrow was being taken into consideration as the ball should’ve been dead. After a long discussion, eventually, the umpires awarded four overthrows and Karthik wasn’t amused.
