Hardik Pandya unlikely to perform leadership duties in IPL 2027 amid reports of his trade from MI to PBKS: Report

Mumbai Indians and Punjab Kings are discussing a potential Hardik Pandya-Arshdeep Singh trade.

Punjab Kings (PBKS) and Mumbai Indians (MI) are reportedly in advanced negotiations for a blockbuster player swap ahead of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2027 season.

The senior managements of both franchises have agreed in principle to a trade that would see star all-rounder Hardik Pandya move to PBKS. In exchange, premier left-arm quick Arshdeep Singh and another player will head to MI.

"Talks are going on. Both parties (MI and PBKS) are keen to make it happen. Having said that, it is not a done deal yet," an IPL source quoted as saying by PTI.

However, a move to Punjab will not bring Hardik back to a captaincy role. Shreyas Iyer has had a highly successful run as the PBKS captain—leading them to the final in 2025—and the franchise has clearly conveyed to the all-rounder that he will join purely as a player.

"With Iyer as captain, Hardik will come in only as a player and that has been conveyed clearly," the IPL source told the news agency.

Instead of leadership, the Ricky Ponting-coached side is understood to be targeting Hardik's all-round capabilities to reinforce their bowling attack, which struggled during the second half of the 2026 season.

However, parting with long-serving pacer and India's top T20I wicket-taker Arshdeep would be a major shift for PBKS.

With Hardik seemingly on his way out after three challenging seasons at the helm, Rohit Sharma is widely expected to regain the captaincy of the Mumbai Indians for the 2027 edition.

Hardik Pandya has been out of action with injuries since the end of the last IPL season, making his physical readiness a key factor. With the BCCI extending the player retention deadline to November 17, both franchises have time to finalize the deal ahead of the mini-auction in Goa on December 16.
