Suryakumar Yadav captained MI in IPL 2026 when Hardik Pandya was injured.
LSG failed to reach the playoffs and performed well below expected levels under Rishabh Pant in IPL 2025 and 2026.
And now, as per SportsTak, LSG has shown interest in trading Suryakumar Yadav from the Mumbai Indians (MI), as they want to make him captain of the franchise. Suryakumar Yadav was a surprise pick as India captain in T20Is after the 2024 T20 World Cup win, and under his leadership, India didn’t lose any bilateral series till the T20 World Cup 2026, which they won at home in grand style.
Suryakumar Yadav had captained the Mumbai Indians in the IPL as well, most recently in IPL 2026. His reported openness to considering the offer could make things interesting for Mumbai. Yet according to SportsTak's report, the franchise is unwilling to let both Hardik and Suryakumar depart in the same transfer window.
The present understanding is that Mumbai would only consider trading Suryakumar to Lucknow if Hardik Pandya stays with the franchise. Put differently, MI are reluctant to lose both players as they seek to reshape their squad before the new season.
Notably, as per the same report, MI has received interest in Hardik Pandya from Punjab Kings (PBKS). The proposed deal may consist of a direct swap involving Arshdeep Singh, though it is understood that Mumbai Indians want extra players to be part of the exchange.
At 32, he is still regarded as one of the most valuable Indian all-rounders in the IPL. His capacity to contribute with both bat and ball, together with his experience of captaining a side to a title, makes him an appealing option for any franchise seeking to reinforce its leadership group.
Meanwhile, Suryakumar Yadav has been with MI since the 2018 IPL and played a big role in their 2019 and 2020 IPL wins. His performances for MI also led to Suryakumar making his India debut in 2021.
This move to Lucknow will definitely make sense for both teams, as the Lucknow Super Giants will get an experienced Indian batsman who can take charge of the team, whereas Mumbai might lose yet another player who has helped them achieve a lot.
